O glamour de Miami é antigo. Centro da elegância no final dos anos 20, a Venetian Pool, em Coral Gables, é uma jóia arquitetônica desenhada pelo arquiteto Phineas Paist. O projeto foi parte da urbanização comedida do visionário George Merrick. A piscina, hoje publica, é um labirinto de pórticos, fontes, torres e cachoeiras que dispensam 820 milhoes de galões de água oriundas de fontes artesanais subterrâneas. Já foi pedreira aberta, e nos dias em que era cassino, gôndolas cruzavam suas águas frescas transportando estrelas de Hollywood e dignitários visitando a Flórida. Passou por uma renovação histórica nos 80 que custou $ 3.5 milhoes. Porém, quem a visita hoje, nota que as rugas de sua história estão bem visíveis: suas paredes de estuque, uma argamassa feita com pó de mármore, cal fina, gesso e areia, são da cor de seda desbotada de onde tufos de samambaia, teimosamente brotam, obstinados a serem parte do paisagismo natural e histórico.
Miami glamour is an old concept. The Venetian Pool, in Coral Gables, was the center of elegance at the end of the 1920’s. This architectural jewel was designed by Phineas Paist. The project was part of the calculated urbanization envisioned by George Merrick. The pool, today a sleepy local swim hole, is a labyrinth of porticos, fountains, towers and waterfalls where 820 million gallons of fresh water from an underground basin circulate freely. It was an open stone quarry originally. In its prime, it became an aquatic casino with a venetian theme complete with gondolas that transported Hollywood stars and dignitaries visiting Florida. The pool went through a massive $3.5 million renovation in the 80s. However, today, visitors notice that the wrinkles of its history are still visible: stucco walls — painted in a peach color that resembles faded silk –are a live vertical garden where colonies of different ferns grow. They are indifferent to time and resolute to become part of historical landscaping.
